Quick fixes before you write
Location is not working. Location needs your permission and a secure (https) page. If you tapped Block, click the lock icon next to the address bar, set Location to Allow, and the reading will start. If your device cannot find its position, move to an open area and try again.
The accuracy looks poor. Computers usually have no GPS and estimate position from Wi-Fi or the network, which can be hundreds of meters off. A phone with GPS is much more precise.
Device altitude says Unavailable. Many computers and some phones do not report altitude. The ground elevation shown above it still comes from the terrain model.
The map is blank or tiles are missing. Reload the page and check your connection. The USGS Topo layer covers the United States only, so it will look empty elsewhere.
USGS maps say they cover the U.S. only. That is expected outside the United States. Search a U.S. place, such as a city and state, to see the maps.
No ZIP code is shown. Some places, such as open water or remote areas, have no code, and a few countries do not use postal codes at all. Try a full street address with the city and state.
The ZIP code is different from my mailing address. A ZIP code found from a position follows delivery routes, not exact boundaries, so the two can differ near the edge of an area. For mail and forms, use the code printed on your mailing address.
The address was not found. Check the spelling and add the city and state or region. When the exact house number is missing, the finder shows the street or the wider area and says which one it used.
I see country figures instead of ZIP figures. ZIP-level figures are available for U.S. ZIP codes only. For other countries the finder shows national figures, and it says so.
What to include in a bug report
- The page address and the tool you were using
- Your device and browser, for example “iPhone 14, Safari” or “Windows laptop, Chrome”
- Whether you allowed location, or used search or the map
- For the ZIP code finder, the search you made, such as a city or a public place
- A screenshot, if you can
- The time it happened
Please do not send an exact home address or private coordinates. A nearby town or a rounded location is enough for us to reproduce most problems.
What we cannot help with
We are not able to provide surveyed elevation certificates, flood zone determinations, engineering or aviation data, medical advice, or navigation help in an emergency. We also cannot change a ZIP code or an address, confirm that a delivery will arrive, or solve postal service problems. For those, please contact a licensed surveyor, your local floodplain office, your local post office, the relevant authority or emergency services.
